“Rīgas satiksme” has concluded 2020 with profit

“Rīgas satiksme” informs that pursuant to annual report data the company has concluded 2020 with a profit of nearly 1 million euros. Also, last year 10 hydrogen powered trolleybuses were accepted for operation and an agreement was reached for resuming of 20 low-floor tram delivery. In 2021 priorities are renewal of the public transport fleet and infrastructure.

In 2020 the introduction of restrictions caused by Covid-19 pandemics and significant decrease of the number of passengers had effect both on the total revenue of the company and revenue from ticket sales. Also, the fine imposed by the Competition Council in the amount of 2,4 million euros reduced the company’s profit from 3,4 million to 1 million.

The decline of revenue could be covered by significantly reducing the expenses. It was achieved by both reviewing the procurement procedures, making them more transparent and publishing all of them at the website www.rigassatiksme.lv, and by ensuring competition within the Framework agreement. An example is fuel procurement procedure, where a Framework agreement was signed with three suppliers, which the company is inviting to participate in price surveys and submit their offers every month for the following three years.  Thus, continuous competition is ensured among suppliers of diesel fuel, which allows receiving the lowest price offer.

In 2020 the total revenue of “Rīgas satiksme” amounted to 183 million euros, which, compared to 2019, is 12,4% less. The revenue from ticket sales for public transport services in 2020 amounted to 31,8 million euro, which, compared to 2019, had decreased by 36,5%, related to introduction of the restrictions due to Covid-19 pandemics.

The operating costs in 2020, compared to 2019, have decreased by 22,7 million euros or 12%, which is owing active involvement of the company Board in the monitoring of the procurement procedures and control of cost efficiency. Significant reduction of costs was also caused by decision of the Riga City Council on cancellation of discounts in routes serviced by SIA “Rīgas mikroautobusu satiksme” , which allowed “Rīgas satiksme” to save  10,7 million euros.

Last year the public transport was used by 89,7 million passengers. Route performance in 2020 was 99,92%, in addition successfully ensuring all scheduled and unscheduled trips corresponding to the emergency situation demand.

In 2020 “Rīgas satiksme” services 54 bus routes, 18 trolleybus routes and 8 tram routes with the total network length of the routes of 1177,1 km, including: bus route length – 904,95 km, tram route length – 101,4 km and trolleybus route length – 170,72 km.

  • performing preliminary works for modernization of “Rīgas satiksme” infrastructure, adapting it to the use of environmentally friendly transport that is planned to be purchased in the few coming years. To continue work on efficient and rational management of the company infrastructure.

Chairman of the Board of “Rīgas satiksme” Džineta Innusa: “The Board of “Rīgas satiksme” has contributed immense work to change the corporate management culture, making it more efficient and transparent. All changes that have been made have positively affected the results of 2020.  But it is equally important to continue and complete the started works and intentions to make the initiated change process irreversible. Despite the contributed work, we still have to take into account the consequences of the past decisions, which have had effect on 2020 budget, as the fine imposed by the Competition Council in the amount of 2,4 million was paid. Also, there are still several criminal proceedings under investigation and the financial audit of the State Revenue Service for the period of 2016-2018 is in process. Thus, we anticipate that the consequences of past decisions will likely affect the results of this year and the years to come. However, despite the above, “Rīgas Satiksme” has a great potential to become the leading passenger carrier not only in the city of Riga, but also in the Riga metropolitan area.”
